Performance Creative Testing on Meta
A performance creative agency makes ads and judges them by results, not taste. We test new Facebook and Instagram ads one variable at a time in a separate testing campaign, write a verdict for each test, and move winners into the campaigns that carry your budget.
Most accounts do not lack ideas, they lack a clean way to tell which idea worked. A test without a written hypothesis usually ends with someone picking the ad they liked.
01 · Method
How a creative test runs
-
1
Hypothesis first
Before launch we write what we expect and why, for example that a problem-first hook beats a product-first hook for cold audiences.
-
2
One variable
The ads in a test differ in one thing only, the angle, the hook, the format or the offer, so the result tells us something.
-
3
Separate testing budget
New ads run in a testing campaign with its own budget, so unproven ads never take spend from proven winners.
-
4
Enough data
We wait for a meaningful number of conversions, or a clear early signal from hook rate and click-through rate, before calling it.
-
5
Verdict and next step
Every test ends with a written verdict, scale, iterate, hold or retire, logged in the portal.

The test log you can read
Every test sits in a shared log with the hypothesis, the ads, the metrics and the decision. Over months this becomes the most valuable asset in the account, a written record of what your customers respond to that stays with you if you ever leave.
It also stops the same failed idea from being tested three times by three different people, which happens more often than anyone admits.
03 · Metrics
Metrics we use to judge creative
- Hook rate
- Three-second video views divided by impressions. Tells us whether the opening stops the scroll.
- Hold rate
- How many viewers keep watching past the opening. A strong hook with a weak hold points to the body of the video.
- Click-through rate
- Outbound clicks per impression. Shows whether the ad made a promise people wanted to follow.
- Cost per result
- The final judge, read together with conversion rate on the landing page. When the page is the bottleneck, the fix sits in landing page CRO, not in the ad.
- Frequency
- How often the same people see an ad. Rising frequency with falling results is the first sign of fatigue.
04 · Fatigue
Why winners stop winning
A winning ad is not a permanent asset. As spend grows the same people see it more often and performance fades. Testing is therefore not a project with an end date but a pipeline that keeps feeding new angles into the account.
Our plans include 12, 30 or 60 new ad creatives a month for that reason. The volume is matched to how quickly accounts of each spend band tend to use up their creative.
05 · Limits
What testing cannot tell you
- A test result holds for the audience, season and offer it ran in, so we retest big winners when any of those change
- Small budgets need longer tests, and we will say so rather than call a winner on thin data
- Platform-reported attribution is a model, so we compare it with your store or CRM numbers in the weekly report
- Creative cannot fix a weak offer, broken tracking or a slow page, which is why the free Facebook ads audit checks all three
